Estate Planning for Non-Traditional Families
The law has default rules about who counts as family and for many of us, those defaults get it wrong. If you are unmarried partners, a chosen family, a household that doesn't match the form's checkboxes, then the people who matter most to you may have no legal standing at all unless you put it in writing. We draft wills, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives that name your people, the partner the intestacy statutes would skip, the chosen family a hospital might turn away, the friend you trust more than any relative. Your documents can say so clearly. This is planning for the family you have, not the one the statute assumes.
Free Name Change and Gender Marker Assistance
We offer free assistance with legal name changes under Wis. Stat. § 786.36 and with updating gender markers on Wisconsin identification and federal records; including your Wisconsin driver's license or ID (Wisconsin DOT), your birth certificate (Wisconsin DHS), and your Social Security record. For clients with safety or privacy concerns, we assist with confidential name change petitions under Wis. Stat. § 786.37(4), which allow qualifying petitioners to avoid the publication requirement. And we don't stop at the court order: we help you carry it through to the documents and agencies where your name actually lives. Court filing fees are set by the county and are separate from our assistance, and we will tell you exactly what they are before you file anything.
